Fatma Şahin

Mayor, Gaziantep, Gaziantep Province, Turkey

Fatma Şahin was born in Gaziantep and received a BS degree in chemical engineering from Istanbul Technical University. From 1988 to 2001, she worked as a plant engineer and plant manager at one of the leading companies of Turkey.

At the general elections held in November 2002, she was elected to the Parliament. At the general elections held on 22 July 2007 and re-elected to the Parliament. During her tenure as parliamentarian, Şahin became a member of Turkish-EU Joint Parliamentary Commission and the served as chairman to Morals and Decency Murders Commission and Research Commission of Violence against Children.  

Fatma Şahin is the first woman Deputy of the Parliament for Gaziantep and Southeastern Anatolia region. 

Şahin assumed different duties at the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) including as vice-chairman of the Party and the member of Central Executive Committee and acted as Women Branches Chairwoman of AK Party between 2007 and 2011.

After the 2011 general election, Şahin was appointed as Minister of Family and Social Policies as the only woman Minister at the Cabinet.

Between the years of 2016-2019 she served as President of UCLG-MEWA (United Cities Local Governments – Middle East and Western Asia) and is the current President of AMF (Asian Mayors Forum) and Union of Municipalities of Turkey.

Mrs. Sahin was elected as the Mayor for Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality for the term of March 2014- March 2019 and re-elected to serve another term until 2024. She is married and the mother of two children.
